Sasquatch

Sasquatch was my final major project at university. The brief of our final major encouraged us to choose our own project within categories. I have always loved the combination of type and image, so naturally for me I wanted to explore my skills within publishing.

The magazine celebrates and displays other designers work within both a digital and printed magazine. My goal was to create exiting layouts adding to the beauty and displaying other artists work whilst still remaining as a brand and a collective series of works.

Here you can see the development ideas. I really wanted the magazine to have a strong identity, and so spent a lot of time creating the visuals for the various aspects of the magazine and website.

In addition to creating the magazine I also wanted to show the theoretical extent a project like this could go. As well as creating the magazine I briefly published a website allowing people to submit their work to me, I also published the digital version of the first issue onto the website and the iTunes store, however due to copyright restrictions it is no longer available.

This poster is a typographic piece created for the Plymouth College of Art, in a group effort to raise funding. Each student was allocated a letter, or symbol to represent within their poster designs. I was given the @ symbol. Within this piece I aimed to represent the obscure roots of the symbol in contrast to its widespread use in popular culture. Taking influence from the Hamsa, a palm shaped amulet representing strength and power, and combining this with a modern representation of the symbol to show its strength in todays society.

Cash Total Pro

Cash Total Pro is a project for the NionNet company, creating software for use in cash handling facilities around the world. As such they wanted branding that kept the themes of their own personal branding whilst also conveying the product. For this brief I created a set of logos that contained much of the original artwork from the NionNet branding, reimagined and refined; whilst incorporating the currency symbol that could be applied to the specific region the product would be in.

Eco Heritage

This is the first freelance project I worked on. Eco Heritage is an eco friendly energy company specialising in solar PV and recycled furniture. Their brief was fairly simple; to redesign their logo, whilst keeping the essence similar, mainly text based and utilising a colour scheme from their website.

Although I didn’t have the freedom to do what I wanted with this project, as I have had with other projects, it has greatly benefited in other ways. Doing work outside of an education environment, showed me things about the creative industry.

Overall I like the final outcomes that you can see here. After a few rounds experimentations I started to refine some older logo sketches given to me, coming to this final conclusion, I created a few colour variations for use across the range of products and services that the company use.

David Fincher

This piece is for monotype a D&AD competition brief. The competition was to design a poster expressing a chosen director through the use of typography. David Fincher has long been one of my favourite directors and thus someone who I wanted to celebrate the work of. This poster drew from subtle elements that keep in line with the original film works but aim to rebrand them in a contemporary and exiting way. I have always worked to create contrast within my design compositions, creating elements that oppose but attract. I have always felt that contrast is a huge part of art. Ever since I first learnt about things like colour theory and negative space, I have wanted to create magnetised and polarised pieces of work.

Proxy

Created during my second year at university the aim of this project was to design and create a visually dynamic publication, which reflects current trends in design publishing.

We had to take into consideration the production and construction of our publication, and how it could be translated into other formats, from mass production and digital publications, to limited edition hand made copies. We also had to factor in the limitations and range of these various reprographic processes.

As for the content of the publication we weren’t limited by any criteria therefore we were allowed creative control of the content and format of our publications.

My response to this design brief was to create a cultural magazine called Proxy. The name stemming from the finding of events and culture through the publication

The production of the magazine was limited to an initial test run. I chose a printed A4 hard copy to represent what it would look like if mass reproduced, choosing basic grain paper and a thicker matt front cover.

In terms of creativity and freedom in what we could achieve within this project, I felt this magazine creatively represents me and what I hope to achieve within the graphics industry.

XL

Our brief was to research at least three external design projects, and answer one of them. We had to base our choice on our career aspirations and intentions, reflecting on what was the most practical in terms of timescales, resources and our own skills.

Again in accordance with professional projects we were instructed to time manage this project, and evidence the time spent on the project to reflect industry standards of being paid by hours worked.

The external projects we were given as a guide were mainly national competitions of which I researched a few before settling on three from D&AD. After selecting my final three, I narrowed down to one answering a brief to create a static, and dynamic graphic poster to represent some key moments in the history of XL recordings.

My response was this typographic poster celebrating the first album released by the recording company in 1990. Taking elements from original artwork produced by XL for a series of compilation albums.

NionNet

NionNet is a software company, producing web applications. The company wanted a new logo and identity package to take their brand forward into the market.

The company knew that they wanted the main subject of the logo to be the Ash, or ‘Nion’ tree, however left me to develop this how I wanted. Together we came up with some of the possibilities of experimenting with root and intertwined branch systems, in a bid to represent the transferal of data from one area to another.

Another key factor in the design was the company’s desire to have the logo as an icon, something that would be easily web friendly. This lead my decisions to go with a minimalist design. The design itself lends to working on a variety of scales, something that is vital for the web and print. This allows the company to be recognisable on a small phone display to a large building banner.

Whilst creating the logos for the company I had 6 variations on the theme, each with different colour themes and styling formats, allowing the clients to choose their favourite to represent the brand identity.
